Scope and Application
This method determines magnesium by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Sample pretreatment according to EPA Method 200.0 determines the applicability.
Applicable Concentration Range
0.02 - 0.5 mg/L (optimal range); 0.007 mg/L (sensitivity).
Interferences
For interferences see EPA Method 200.0. Interference caused by aluminum at concentrations greater than 2 mg/L is masked by addition of lanthanum. Sodium, potassium, and calcium cause no interference at concentrations less than 400 mg/L.

Sample Handling
Sample handling and preservation procedures are provided in EPA Method 200.0. If high amounts of suspended solids exist, it is acceptable to allow the sample to settle and analyze the supernatant.
