Brief Method Summary
Extractable base/neutral and acid pollutants are subjected to liquid-liquid extraction. The pollutants in the extracts are then determined by GC/MS.
Scope and Application
This method is applicable to municipal and industrial discharges.
Applicable Concentration Range
None given.
Interferences
(1) Contamination of samples, solvent, and carrier gases with target analytes (especially compounds common to environmental laboratories, like methylene chloride). (2) Contamination of samples with sulfur (primarily present in base-neutral fractions). (3) Septum bleed (compounds from the injection s
Quality Control Requirements

Sample Handling
Collect samples in 1 L amber glass bottles. Refrigerate samples at 4oC, away from the light, until analysis. Treat samples with 80 mg sodium thiosulfate/L of sample if residual chlorine is present. Extract samples within 7 days of collection and analyze within 40 days of extraction.
Maximum Holding Time
7 days (prior to extraction) 40 days (after extraction)
Relative Cost
$201 to $400
